Olympic gymnast
Paul Hamm went into the 2004 Summer Olympics with the intention of being the
first American to win an all-around gold medal in the men’s gymnastics. After
his first three events he led the field, but in the fourth event, the vault,
he made a crucial mistake and tumbled to 12th place.
What he did next
is the difference between good athletes and great athletes. He had two events
left and chose to give it his all, to Finish Strong. On the parallel bars he
moved up to fourth place, and a truly history-making performance on the high
bar where he poured all of his energy, focus, and determination into his
performance earned him the all-around gold.
Try this: Consider how you react to setbacks, failures, or mistakes. Do
you allow them to derail you? What could you do differently to accept them as
things that happened, but move forward and Finish Strong and perhaps achieve
great success of your own?
