THE ULTIMATE PRODUCTIVITY

It's rare that I find something that is both "instant" and
the "ultimate" guide to anything. In general, I find the
important things in life take some time, some effort and a
bit of skill. While "instant" fixes may be fast, they
seldom last.
Recently, however, a workshop with some clients helped me
clarify something that is so clear and powerful, I'm
thrilled to share it with you. This was a company
leadership retreat and my job was to help them clarify
their goals and develop more effective strategies to GET
THINGS DONE. In the end, it's what we achieve in life that
endures. It's not what we intend, or who we know. It's what
we do that matters most.
So, with that premise, we focused on productivity. Under
what conditions do we accomplish the most, with the least
effort and the most fun? What "causes" those special days
when everything goes right? Here are five key steps we
sorted out:
1. Time Management. This is typically the least effective
way to manage our lives. We're trying to manage something
we don't own and that fundamentally cannot be managed or
changed. Time management is simply a non-starter and if you
aren't managing your priorities, physical space, and
personal Eco-System well, other people will certainly try
to "help" you, with frustrating results. But it's the most
common issue, so we addressed it first.
2. Activity Management. This at least has the virtue of
being "do-able." We can choose our priorities and manage
our actions through the day. Practice "single handling." Do
one thing at a time and do it well. Avoid dead-end
activities at all costs! Use a daily calendar and a weekly
planner. Plan your activities and stick to your plan!
3. Energy Management. This is what most people are
actually hoping for when they talk about time management.
They want to get more done with less effort and have
something left for "me" or "we" at the end of the day.
Manage your energy. Sleep well, rest often, be efficient.
Do your most important work when you are most awake. Put
your "best stuff" into your most important priorities and
let things of secondary importance get secondary effort.
It's not the quickest or easiest path to the good life, but
it's a reasonable start.
4. Space Management. Now things get interesting! Manage
your environment so it's hard for people and things to
interrupt you. Close the door and hide! Eliminate
distractions and replace or eliminate anything that annoys
or frustrates you. Make your office, car, kitchen, bedroom
and bathroom "perfect!" Paint the walls, get new tools or a
desk chair that fits! Make everything around you more
functional, more comfortable and more inspiring. You'll get
more done and have more fun doing it.
5. Eco-System Design(tm). This is what we're looking for!
Who one wants to "get by" or "manage" when you can create
the life of your dreams! The key is developing systems that
effortlessly, automatically and reliably "pull" you toward
your most important goals. Why "push" when you can let
systems "pull" you forward?
Surround yourself with things and people that inspire you,
that make you laugh, that GIVE you energy (rather than
drain it) and challenge you to be your best, most
productive and most joyful. Fill your life with things and
people that pull you forward. No distractions! No
annoyances, no break-downs, no crises. Use preventive, pro-
active maintenance in every area of life so you live well
and can do the work you are called to do!
Fortunately, creating the life of your dreams is not hard!
People often say they can't have a perfect eco-system
because they can't afford it or don’t have time, or their
family or friends won't allow it. Nonsense! Creating a
great life is not hard--living with frustration is hard!
Creating a perfect life may require some new habits, but
living well is not nearly as hard as living with problems!

THE HUMAN TOUCH IN BUSINESS

For years, we've been hearing about how bad airline service
is, but recently a United employee impressed me! I even
bought her a small box of candy from the airport gift shop
to thank her. What did she do that was so impressive?
She listened. She got Mary and myself on the next available
flight, and smiled while she did it.
She did her job with personality, humility, friendliness
and style. She laughed with us, sympathized with our
situation, and took time to get us the best possible
connections. It took her no more than five extra minutes,
but the sense that she cared and that she was doing her
best left a huge impression.
United airlines is a big corporation, with thousands of
employees, and yet this woman in the Seattle airport
clearly valued our business. She treated us as friends; she
treated us with respect, kindness and concern.
I recently heard an ad for a large insurance company,
promising that every call would be answered by a human
being within 60 seconds. It was a powerful ad and it
obviously struck a chord--I remember it out of all the
thousands of ads I've heard recently.
In an age of impersonal business transactions, the human
touch is a uniquely powerful selling idea. That may be a
sad commentary but it is definitely a sound business
proposition. People have always appreciated the human
connection and we are powerfully attracted to those who
respect us.
To give your business or professional practice an
unbeatable edge, answer your own phone. Use your first name
and address customers by their names. Reach out and touch
someone in a warm and friendly manner, and they may become
your customer for life!

4 STEPS TO A SUPER ATTITUDE

Unexpected circumstances can be thrown at you, but what is the thing that counts most in these situations? What counts most is how you react to what happens to you, especially when you have unexpected problems of any kind.
Here are four things you can do to assure that your attitude is the very best it can be, under all circumstances.
Focus On the Future
First, whatever challenges you face, focus on the future rather than on the past. Instead of worrying about who did what and who is to blame, focus on where you want to be and what you want to do. Get a clear mental image of your ideal successful future, and then take whatever action you can to begin moving in that direction. Get your mind, your thoughts, and your mental images on the future.
Think About the Solution
Second, whenever you're faced with a difficulty, focus on the solution rather than on the problem. Think and talk about the ideal solution to the obstacle or setback, rather than wasting time rehashing and reflecting on the problem. Solutions are inherently positive, whereas problems are inherently negative. The instant that you begin thinking in terms of solutions, you become a positive and constructive human being.
Look For the Good
Third, assume that something good is hidden within each difficulty or challenge. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, a major proponent of positive thinking, once said, "Whenever God wants to give us a gift, he wraps it up in a problem." The bigger the gift you have coming, the bigger the problem you will receive. But the wonderful thing is that if you look for the gift, you will always find it.
Seek the Valuable Lesson
Fourth, assume that whatever situation you are facing at the moment is exactly the right situation you need to ultimately be successful. This situation has been sent to you to help you learn something, to help you become better, to help you expand and grow.
Decide to Be Positive
A Positive Mental Attitude is indispensable to your success. You can be as positive as you want to be if you will simply think about the future, focus on the solution and look for the good. If you do what other successful people do, if you use your mind to exert mental control over the situation, you will be positive and cheerful most of the time. And you will reap the benefits enjoyed by all successful people.
Action Exercises
Here are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action:
First, become solution-oriented with every difficulty you face. Make a habit of looking for the answers to your questions, the solutions to your problems.
Second, seek for the valuable lesson in every adversity. Make a list of every idea or insight you can gain from every setback or difficulty.
Third, think on paper. Take some time to write out every detail of the problem, and then take the most logical next step to solve it.

THE WINNING EDGE

Did you know that if you become just a little bit better in certain critical areas of selling, it can translate into enormous increases in sales?
Thousands of hours and millions of dollars have been spent studying the most successful salespeople in our society. They have been interviewed exhaustively, as have their customers, co-workers and managers. What do you think they found out to be the most important thing to become one of the best in the business? They learned that selling is more psychological than anything else.
The Key to High Performance
One of the most important concepts ever discovered in the field of human performance is called the "winning edge concept." This concept or principle, states that, "small differences in ability can translate into enormous differences in results." What it means is that if you become just a little bit better in certain critical areas of selling, it can translate into enormous increases in sales. In fact, you may be on the verge of a major step forward in your sales results at this very moment just by learning and practicing something new and different to what you have done before.
If a horse comes in first by a nose, it wins ten times the prize money of the horse that comes in second, even though the difference is only a nose, or perhaps a couple of inches, in a photo finish.
Small Differences Mean Big Rewards
Does this mean that the horse that wins by a nose is ten times faster than the horse that comes in second, by a nose? Of course not! Is the horse that wins by a nose twice as fast, or fifty percent faster, or ten percent faster? The answer is "no" to all of these. The horse that wins is only a nose faster, but it translates into ten times the prize money.
Get 100% of the Commission
By the same token, the salesperson who gets the sale for himself and his company gets one hundred percent of the business and one hundred percent of the commission. Does this mean that his product is one hundred percent better than that of the competition, or one hundred percent cheaper?
The fact is that the product may not even be as good and it may cost even more than that of the competitor, but the top salesman gets the sale nonetheless. The person who gets the sale, is in most cases, not vastly better than the person who loses the sale. He or she merely has the "winning edge" and that translates into one hundred percent of the business.
Action Exercises
Now, here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.
First, identify the important things you do in every sale, from prospecting to closing, and think about what you could do to improve in each area.
Second, select one specific area where you feel you are weak and make a plan to become absolutely excellent in this area. This decision alone could change your career.

5 STEPS TO THE FUTURE YOU DESIRE

In Brian Tracy’s wonderful book, "Create
Your Own Future." It's one of the best sources of
inspiration, strategy and motivation I know, and I highly
recommend it.
What struck me is the truth that we create our own lives,
every single day. Think of the enormous opportunity (and
responsibility) that gives us!
Too often we drift through life. We go to work, come home,
have dinner and go to bed so we can do it all over again
tomorrow. It’s a familiar routine, we are advancing our
career, earning an income, and supporting ourselves and our
loved ones. What we forget is that unexamined daily
routines can lead to destinations we would never choose for
ourselves.
My readers are ambitious people. We have dreams and
goals, we want "more" and we hope the future will be better
than the present. We want great things for ourselves, and
better things for our children. And yet, we forget that
every day--right now as you read this--we are creating our
future.
Every day, our actions take us slightly closer to our
goals, or we end up one day further away. Every day, we
either move in the direction we choose to go, or we drift
with the wind and the current, and the pressures of life
around us.
Long-time readers know I am not enthused about dramatic,
sudden change because I don’t think life works that way.
Life is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and I believe
that, "inch by inch, anything’s a cinch!"
Here are five steps I believe are absolutely vital to
creating the future you want:
1. First, be clear about your desires. If you want to start
a business, move to a different city, earn more money or
change careers, define it! Write it down! Talk about it!
Use your imagination to refine your vision. Whatever you
want, in any area of life, be specific and get clear!
2. Second, claim your power. You have enormous personal
power. You can choose what to read and how to use your
time. You CHOOSE how to spend your money. You CHOOSE your
friends, your skills and your aspirations. Use your power!
3. Third, have a plan. "Rome wasn’t built in a day" and
you are unlikely to transform your life or achieve any
major goal without a clear, on-going strategy. Life takes
time! Have a plan that will take you where you want to go.
4. Fourth, get the support you need. Whatever you want,
there are books and people, classes and environments that
will help you get there. Get a coach. Start a MasterMind
group. Re-arrange your office, buy the books, DVD’s and
audio programs. Attend the conferences. Surround yourself
with support!
5. Fifth, be who you are! Stand up for your values and
move in the direction you want to go. Take daily action,
and persist. You don’t have to be rude or radical, but you
do have to be "captain of your ship." Day by day, take
action. Make adjustments. Change the details. Try. Try
again. Try until.
Whatever you want in life, you can get it. Whatever your
age or circumstance, other people have had similar dreams
and made them come true. As long as your desires are moral
and you are willing to play fair, you can have any future
you want! The only questions are whether you have a good
plan and whether you will pay the price. You CAN have the
future you desire, if you sail your ship in the direction
you want to go.

PROVEN, SUCCESSFUL & MOTIVATIONAL TIPS TO AGE BACKWARDS

If you are at all like me, (a "Baby boomer") you've probably heard expressions like "60 is the new 40." The truth is actually that anyone can be 68 going on 50. All you need is a motivational mindset. Then you, too, can start counting the calendar backwards at each birthday.
Beyond good diet and exercise -- which are critical for anyone at any age -- getting motivated is the key to aging well. Here are five ways to adopt a motivational mindset, launch your own age rollback and engage the world at any age:
1. Change your WOE to WOW ratio.
There's nothing more de-motivating than living in a world of WOE (which is an acronym that stands for What On Earth). The world of WOE is dark and consists largely of finding fault and blame. WOE is like a leech that sucks the life spirit out of you. Its opposite, WOW (which means Wonderfully Obsessed with Winning) infuses every moment with excitement about the world. WOW is that frame of mind that motivates you to fully embrace whatever you're doing. No, you can't get rid of WOE -- it's part of the human condition. But you can choose to minimize the presence of WOE and focus on WOW; the key is to become more aware of WOE's presence and to consciously opt for WOW. Try it. Keep a notebook of how much time you spend in a WOE state versus a WOW state. Then set a goal to focus on WOW for 15 minutes as you start your day. Soon, it will become a habit, and you won't even have to think about it.
2. Get curious.
Many studies have shown the more you flex your mind as you age, the healthier your mind will be. In addition to engaging in brain-cell building activities like puzzles, ask questions about how things work and why things are. Nothing motivates like a good question. Find a headline story each day that you want to learn more about. Find a topic each week that you want to research through books or using online resources. Adopt the curiosity of a child. The more new things you learn, the more you'll be motivated to discover new areas of interest.
3. Invest in the moment.
It's so easy to look back with regrets or nostalgia that we forget to see the joy of what's happening in the present. Ditto for spending time gazing into the future with apprehension or fear. Try an experiment: every day, spend five minutes focusing on the here and now, and allow yourself to feel totally invested in whatever you're doing, whether it's work or play. Be conscious that you're in the moment. When you get comfortable with that notion, expand the time you spend in the here and now each day.
4. Let go and take a higher perspective.
When you were younger, you were probably in the mode of striving for more -- more money, more status, more security or more attention. More anything. As you age, that pressure starts to diminish. But if you're like most of us, you still likely cling to the notion you're in some kind of a race you must win. Let it go! When you stop competing against others, you'll be motivated to appreciate those things that really matter and you probably already have.
5. Do things that put you in a good mood.
Good moods don't just happen. They come about from doing things that make us feel happy, things we enjoy. When we were younger, it was easy to feel good because we weren't shy about letting our hair down and having fun. You can recapture that habit now. Incorporate at least one thing a day into your routine that puts you in a good mood whether it's taking a walk, completing a puzzle or pulling out a board game or a deck of cards with friends. When you're feeling good, you'll likely be more motivated to try new things. And you can almost hear the clock ticking backwards.
Be aware a motivational mindset doesn't come overnight. But the more receptive you are to it, the more you'll enjoy waking up every morning -- and flipping another page back on your internal calendar!

LEVERAGING THE SMALL & NIMBLE

This week I listened to a training call Michael Angier did
for TIPS subscribers several years ago. What stood out for
me was his reminder that small businesses often fail to
leverage their advantages over larger competitors.
As an entrepreneur or small business, you can respond
instantly to new opportunities. In a small company, with
the right attitude, you can often seize a new opportunity
in as little as 15 minutes, while your large competitor
might take months to form a committee!
One of the reasons I enjoy coaching and training with small
and medium-size companies is their speed of execution.
Often, I've met with an owner in the morning and seen new
ideas being applied before the close of business that same
day! Or, I've done a training on a Friday morning and come
back a week or a month later to see dramatic changes. I
love that!
Small companies can form alliances with their customers and
suppliers that are simply impossible for larger companies.
You KNOW your customers! Ask them what they want. Ask them
to help you serve them better. What customer would refuse
to help you develop a better product at a lower price? Use
your alliances!
Finally, small companies benefit from small changes in ways
that large companies simply cannot. For a small business, a
new product or customer that brings a $100,000 in new sales
is a big deal! You can get interested in that! You can
afford to respond and profit from that. In contrast, an
Amazon or an Apple literally can't afford to care or even
notice a $100,000 deal.
Successful businesses leverage their strengths. They use
technology, mobility and creativity in ways that large
bureaucracies simply cannot match.

THE UNSTOPPABLE POWER OF SMALL STEPS

One of the great tragedies is to dream but take no action,
or ineffective action, to make your dream come true. To die
with your dreams and aspirations still inside you, waiting
for another time, another day, or a "big break" is the
greatest of failures. As I get older, I'm learning that we
cannot wait!
Literally everything you see and every tool you use, even
the chair you're sitting on, began as nothing but thought.
Someone had an idea for a chair. Henry Ford had an idea
that cars could be in every garage. Your computer began as
an idea and a series of huge, crude devices in the 1940's.
The computer you are using right now began as someone's
idea that they could manufacture and sell computers better,
faster and cheaper than anyone else.
Everything starts with an idea. It always has, and always
will. The life you are now living is the result of all your
thoughts and decisions to this point. Your future will be--
it must and can only be--what you imagine for yourself.
Many people have observed that "ideas are things." Thoughts
and words have the power to move us, to change us, and to
become living, breathing, tangible things! In a sense, our
world is made up of nothing but thoughts and words!
But there is a gulf between an idea and its fulfillment.
Most "things" are actually still-born and never come to
fruition because we fail to span the gulf between potential
and reality. That gap can only be bridged with daily
action.
How many times have you thought of an invention or process
that could be worth a fortune, done nothing about it, and
then found that same (or a similar) product for sale a few
months later? We've all had that experience. Someone got
rich off "your" idea and the difference is that they took
specific, concrete ACTION. Their product is in the store,
making money, and your idea is still inside you,
accomplishing little. Don't let that happen again!
Here are some basics, some essentials to make your dreams
come true:
1. Plan your days. Every evening, plan the following day.
First thing in the morning, plot your priorities. Leaders
have always done this! This is not new! But only about 4%
of the population does it. Write down your priorities and
choose your daily actions. In advance. Every day.
2. Keep a list of big things. On your desk or on the
dashboard of your car, keep a list of your most important
projects, goals and commitments. Keep it where you see it,
and read it, every day. Keep it current. What we think
about, gets done.
3. Keep a list of small things. Keep a list of 5-minute
tasks, phone calls or notes that you can do any place, any
time. When you wait for an appointment, make that call.
When you have a minute, send a note or read a few pages.
Always know "what's next" and take lots of small, effective
actions, every single day.
4. Take magnificent care of yourself! Healthy, happy,
energetic people get the most done. It takes time and
energy to achieve greatness. If you "don't have time", or
are "too tired" or too distracted or too busy with small
things, you will not achieve your dreams. Take care of
yourself. Manage your life.
We've all heard the phrase, "Rome wasn't built in a day."
We know that "a journey of a thousand miles starts with a
single step," and we've heard the Serenity Prayer that God,
"Give me the courage to change the things I can."
You cannot often achieve great things over-night because in
general, human beings do not do "big" things. We do little
things. We get up, we go to work. We hug our loved ones and
make phone calls. We check email, exercise and fix dinner.
We do little things! Highly successful people simply do the
right little things, at the right time, in the right way--
and they do lots of them.
If you would achieve great things, do little things and
pile them one on top of another, until you reach the stars.
Start today.

7 SIGNS YOU'RE IN THE WRONG JOB.

Do any of the following statement describe you? If so, it may be time to reconsider your career path.
1. You would switch careers in a heartbeat if money wasn't a factor.
If you would switch careers if you knew that you would make enough money, then something inside you knows that you're meant to be doing something else. There is something I like to call the "yeah but" syndrome. Here's what I mean. "Would I like to have a more fulfilling job?" "Yeah but I won't make as much money as I make now." "Yeah but people will think I'm crazy for leaving such a good job." "Yeah but it would be too hard to start all over." "Yeah but people will think I'm being irresponsible and selfish." Try to catch yourself when you're doing this. If you can stop yourself right after the "yeah" you will be limiting the ways in which your fears and doubts have control over you and what is possible for you. This is the first step to preventing your assumptions and fears from stopping you in your tracks every time.
2. You live for the weekends.
Do you spend your days miserable at work, counting down the minutes until quitting time, daydreaming about winning the lottery? I don't blame you. Your precious time is too valuable to be spent doing something that has no meaning and brings little enjoyment to your life. Imagine how different your life would be if you loved your work. It would feel as if you had added forty hours to every week!
3. You feel like a different person when you're at work.
Is the person that people see at work a good and accurate representation of who you really are? Would people be shocked to know what you're really like when you're not at work? Do you feel enthused when you answer the question: What do you do? For people who love their jobs, their work is an extension of who they are and what they stand for. If you're in the wrong job however, it may say nothing about you as a person and merely be a means to paying the bills. Begin to work towards a job that is the perfect fit to your personality.
4. You actually look forward to getting a root canal because it gets you out of work.If you truly can't stand spending 40 plus hours per week at your job and you relish every opportunity to be away from your job then you are being sent a clear signal. You are clearly not expressing your real self and contributing to the world in the manner in which you were intended to. Let these recurring feelings and thoughts of escaping work be reminders that you have bigger better things to do with your life.
5. You are experiencing physical symptoms such as headaches, tension, lethargy, and/or anxiety as a result of your work.
These symptoms may be your body's way of telling you that you need to make some changes in your life. When we have stopped listening to our intuition in favor of doing what we think we're "supposed" to do, this may be the only way for our true selves to speak to us. Our unhappiness with our circumstances begins to manifest itself into various physical ailments. When we refuse to listen to the hunches and clues given to us by our intuition, our bodies speak louder in order to steer us in the right direction. I can attest to this because when I was in the wrong job I suffered from chronic headaches and once I began to steer myself in the right direction they subsided and eventually disappeared. Start learning to listen to your body and your feelings without worrying what other people will think.
6. When you go to social gatherings, the last thing you want to talk to people about is work. When you walk out that door at quitting time do you make every effort to "leave work at work"? What sort of work would have you so excited that you would be eager to discuss what you're working on with everyone you come across? When you're excited about what you're working – you never really leave your work. It is part of you and it is something that you feel that you must share with the world. It's a rewarding and fulfilling state to be in. You'll never be able to leave work at work again and you'll love it!
7. You would switch careers in a heartbeat if you only knew what you wanted to do instead.
You know you're not happy with your current career situation but you're not sure what to do about it. Once you figure out what your ideal career situation is, you will gain momentum and confidence in order to transition to a much better work situation. Simply having the yearning for a different job, even if you don't know exactly what you want, is a signal to you that you need to do some self-discovery. I highly recommend that you begin to consider your interests, background, skills, and talents to consider your options. You'll be one step closer to being one of those people who loves their jobs and gains personal satisfaction from their work.
Take note of how much time you are spending doing things that are not personally fulfilling, that aren't deserving of your precious time, skills, and resources, and that aren't an expression of who you are and what you have to offer the world. Then take note of how much of your time is spent recovering and recuperating from stress and how much of a toll being in an unfulfilling job is taking on your body and your health. Coming to this kind of realization can be difficult but it can also be the beginning of important journey that you know you must take. And I truly hope that you will.
Consider this your call to action. Being committed to finding and doing the work that you're meant to be doing is one of the most important things that you can do to ensure a happy and fulfilling life for you and your family. And I say you and your family because I know how important your loved ones are to you and that sometimes you feel that you must stay right where you are because it the practical thing to do and they are counting on you. But really, being committed to being practical and to remaining in an unhappy career situation is not doing anybody any good. Imagine how much more high quality time you could spend with your loved ones if you weren't always stressed out and drained by your job. And imagine how inspired they will be when you demonstrate the courage of living a meaningful life and pursuing your genuine interests.

GOALS....FOR ACHIEVING SUCCESS

Success is the intentional, premeditated use of choice and decision. Unless you choose—with certainty—what it is you want, you accept table scraps by default!
The world is plump with opportunity. With boldness and conviction, stick a fork into the goals you want by being decisive.
You are born with great capabilities, but you will not achieve your potential until you call upon yourself to fulfill it. You will rise to the occasion when it presents itself; yet, to assure self-fulfillment, you must provide occasions to rise to.
Clearly defined goals allow you to travel toward another horizon that represents the end of one experience and the transition to a new and better existence. The objective is to choose the right goals, and then to create the necessary causes—the effects will follow!
The DIFFERENCE between what one person and another achieves depends more on goal CHOICES than on ABILITIES.
The profound differences between successful people and others are the goals they choose to pursue. Individuals with similar talents, intelligence, and abilities will achieve different results because they select and pursue different goals.
Each decision affects WHAT YOU BECOME. We form our decisions and our decisions form us.
There is no escaping this; the smallest choices are important because—over time—their cumulative effect is enormous.
Never overlook the obvious: The nature and direction of your life change the instant you decide what goals you want to pursue.
Once you make a decision, you start down a path to a new destination. At the moment the decision is made, your decision to pursue a goal alters what you are becoming. Just one spin of the lock's dial—a single choice—can alter your life, your destiny, your legacy.
Think about it—your goal decisions represent and express your individuality. You seal your fate with the choices you make.
YOU DEFINE YOURSELF BY YOUR DECISIONS.
Your dialog with success is ultimately a solo one. Decisions and goals made must be your own if you are to call your life a success.
Always establish the best goals you can. Goals are the seeds of success—you become only what you plant. The quality of your harvest is a direct reflection of the quality of your seeds...your decisions!
Indecision is the big eraser of opportunity and potential. Risks and costs accompany every decision; however, the price of decision is far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction. When it comes to decisiveness, squatters have no rights.
Everyone has an official wish list of things they think are "reasonable." What about the unofficial wish list? The one that common sense tells you to ignore? The list that exists deep in your mind, the list that keeps you up at night, the list that makes your toes wiggle when you think of it? Why not choose that list for a change?
How long have you dreamed of being, having, and doing what you really want? Think big, as when it comes to your goals, the size of your ambition does matter.

IN 2013 CELEBRATE YOUR GREATNESS.

The start of a new year is traditionally a time for taking
inventory and committing to new and better things in the
year ahead. Some still call them "New Year's Resolutions",
but I'm not a fan of that phrase.
It's worn-out and too filled with memories of past failure
to inspire much hope for the future. If it works for you,
go for it! But for myself, I prefer a more analytical
process. Rather than Resolutions, I prefer to make plans,
design strategies, make clear commitments, and then execute
them on a daily basis. It works better for me.
So, what specific plans, strategies and commitments should
you make for this brand new year? That, of course, is
always the rub.
The temptation is to make big, grandiose plans for wealth,
achievement and (at long last) the success you've always
desired. Those big, impressive plans sound so good! They
impress us--and our friends--and that's good. But too
often, they also include things beyond our control (like a
booming economy or the cooperation of the market-place) and
while they sound good, they also fill us with anxiety and
undermine our confidence.
My suggestion is to set goals you can absolutely control,
and to divide them between internal and external goals.
The first part is easy. Goals should always be under your
personal control. It's usually a mistake to set a goal for
other people to start doing things they have not done in
the past. Goals for "world peace" or for "my spouse to quit
drinking" might be examples. We can always encourage others
to change their behavior, but in the end, most of us have
enough trouble controlling our own behavior without trying
to control others.
For 2013, set goals that begin with, "I will. . ."
A goal that, "I will read 10 books this year," followed by
a list of the ten books you've chosen is a great goal! On
the other hand, a goal that "This year my teenage daughter
will choose more appropriate boyfriends," is more
problematic. Don't set yourself up for that! How about
changing it to, "This year I will be a better listener and
do what I can as a skilled parent to help my daughter
make smarter choices"? I think it will work out better.
Second, make sure the majority of your goals are internal
goals that are completely under your control. A goal that
"This year I will be more patient" or a goal to "Be more
thoughtful around the house" is under your control. You can
do it and your success is entirely up to you. There are
strategies that will help you and which do not depend on
other people.
Work harder on changing yourself than on changing others.
Become a person of kindness, wisdom and generosity, and
other people will respond to you in wonderful ways.
Third, and lastly, set external goals. These are goals
where your actions can have a powerful influence on the
outcome, but you accept that the results are not completely
under your control. You might set goals to increase your
income or to publish the book you've always wanted to
write. These are good and important goals! But, they are
very different from internal goals.
You can have a goal for a family vacation to Hawaii, but
recognize that illness, weather, scheduling and a myriad of
other things may disrupt even the best plans. You are not a
failure if you've done what you can do, but a typhoon hits
the Big Island on the day of your departure!
Most people set too many external goals and too few
internal ones. External goals are good! Most of the time,
we achieve them and that's wonderful! But even when we do,
the results can be transitory and, sometimes disappointing.
In contrast, internal goals stay with us forever. They
transform our lives and empower us to continue achieving
external goals for the rest of our lives.
"Work harder on yourself." I think you'll like the results.

LEVERAGE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION FOR BETTER PRODUCTIVITY AND BUSINESS SUCCESS!

The New Year is here and already some are having doubts about their ability to stick to their resolutions. The problem with most resolutions is that they start out good and strong, but eventually wane and fade within a few weeks.
Yet, despite all that, a few individuals will actually succeed in changing their habits and improving their lifestyle--permanently!
What is their secret? They take baby steps and avoid sudden or drastic changes. The most common reason New Year's Resolutions fail is that people try to do too much too soon. When we try to change too many things at once, we tend to lose focus and energy.
Avoid making vague resolutions like "I'm going to improve my business!" While your intentions are good, you need to be more specific about what part of your business you want to improve. You need to support your resolution with a concrete action plan and employ a proven method for improving specific aspects of your business.
Now, as an entrepreneur, you're probably swamped with work. When you're running a small business, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you need to do everything at once. No wonder most people feel so tired and worn out with no time left for other things!
Boost your productivity and improve the prospect of your small business by using these useful hints. Get started on the right track in 2013:
1. Learn to delegate.
Delegation not only allows you to have a healthy work-life balance, but perhaps more importantly, it frees up a lot of your time for thinking and planning.
2. Stop procrastination.
One of the main reasons we procrastinate is we find our task so overwhelming. The key to overcoming this hurdle is break things down into smaller, more manageable steps.
3. Leverage the power of Business Planning:
a. It improves your organization's ability to adapt to unforeseen events.
b. It crystallizes your goals and objectives.
c. It ensures all your decisions are interrelated.
d. It helps your company keep its competitive edge.
e. It minimizes oversights and errors.
4. Learn something new every day.
Learning something new -- whether it relates to your business or not -- will add to your skills and open up new opportunities and will add new dimensions to your life.
5. Embrace change.
A lot of people are afraid of change. Change is inevitable! So, you might as well get used to it. To help you become more accepting of change, try to do something new every month or every quarter--a different kind of music, a new hairstyle or attend new networking events. Don't be afraid to experiment to see what works and what doesn't.
Five Steps for Making Your New Year's Resolution Work for You:
1. Focus on one habit or skill at a time. This ensures that you can remain focused and are able to devote the required time and energy to succeed.
2. Introduce changes gradually.
3. Try to make it fun and more interesting -- it will seem less like work!
4. Start with the easy one's first to ease you into the new habit or skill.
5. Seek support from relatives, friends, and colleagues. Find people who are supportive about your resolutions and stay away from non-supportive people!
Ensuring the success of your New Year's Resolutions -- boosting your personal productivity, improving time management, and experimenting with related skills -- is possible for anyone to accomplish.

LOOK BACK ON 2012 AND LOOK FORWARD TO 2013

"Life is divided into three terms-that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present to live better in the future." ~William Wordsworth, British poet.

If you're anything like me, you recently looked up and wondered (or said aloud to a friend), "Hey, what the heck happened to 2012?"
As we all know from experience, time really does fly when you're having fun. When it also flies at work, that's a good thing, because you know work fascinates you nearly as much as play. Wonderful news, right? Be careful here: just because you've kept busy and enjoy what you do doesn't mean you've actually accomplished anything lately. To get ahead, we have to leverage our past experiences to gain an advantage in the future.
So as you close out 2012, take a little time to study what you've learned. Ask yourself two fundamental questions when planning for the New Year:
1. How have I changed emotionally, spiritually, physically, mentally, financially, and socially in 2012 (how can I usher out the old)?
2. What do I want to do more or less of in 2013 (how can I ring in the new)?
 Ushering Out the Old
On the work front, look back and consider all the projects you and your team have completed, as well as the status of those in progress. How effective and productive were you? Questions you might ask include:
· Have I left anything undone I needed to complete this year?
· What project(s) do I feel happiest about completing?
· What was my greatest triumph?
· What was my smartest decision this year?
· How about my dumbest?
· What good habits did I pick up in 2012?
· What bad habits did I break?
· Did I pick up any new bad habits?
· What surprised me most?
· What was my biggest lesson learned?
· What was my biggest risk, and how did it turn out?
· Who impacted me most this year?
· What action would cap off 2012 perfectly?
· How could I sum up 2012 in 10 words or less?
Think carefully about each question. Take your time and write down your answers as you go.
Ringing in the New
The future represents the original "undiscovered country," and one should be well prepared before blazing new trails. So after you've weighed the lessons of 2012, consider what you've learned and use that knowledge as you move forward. Not only will this help you avoid the stumbles of previous forays, it'll prove useful in defining new strategies and goals. So pose another set of questions to yourself, facing forward this time:
· What accomplishment would make me happiest next year?
· What do I look forward to the most?
· What things (or people) should I avoid?
· What should I improve about myself?
· What can I do to enhance my professional value?
· How can I better my financial position?
· What external changes are likely to affect me?
· Does my current professional path take me where I really want to go? If not, how can I start changing that?
· Should I make more of an effort to indulge myself in any particular areas...or did I overdo it last year?
· What do I most want to learn this year?
· What do I expect to be my biggest risk?
· What's my one-word theme for 2013?
 Bottom Line
Viewed objectively, these questions have no right or wrong answers; the only answers that matter are those that feel right to you. My list of answers may not resemble yours. The point of this exercise is to learn from the recent past, so you have the proper ammunition and attitude as you charge forward into the future. Happy New Year!
